Why I Disagree with Pageants

It's amazing at how corrupt society is now a day. Girls are wearing a full set of makeup at age ten, middle schoolers are pregnant, sexual conversations are the highlight to talk about. You know? One thing that has bothered me for a while though, and I am shocked is so popular to society, is the fact that mothers allow and/or force their little girls to prance around on stage as if they're a pin-up model.

Take the hit TV show, Toddlers & Tiaras, for example. The girls anywhere from a baby to about eleven years old have it ingrained in their little noggins to be beautiful. Part of the prizes are based on pure beauty. What is that teaching them?

  • If I win, I'm beautiful. If I don't win, I must not be beautiful.

At such a young age, that is extremely dangerous to teach them. As Marilyn Monroe once said, "All little girls should be told they are pretty, even if they aren't." That's not the hot thing to do on Toddlers and Tiaras though. By giving awards for being dubbed most beautiful makes the rest of the competitors feel awful and shatters their self-esteem. Girls should feel and be told they are beautiful, but by not receiving the award for Most beautiful is doing nothing but corrupting their minds and at such a young age where they should be told many times they are beautiful.

Look at the outfits they wear. I see these precious toddlers, hence the name of the show, and even babies wearing a full set of makeup, which consists of: Foundation, powder, eyeshadow, blush, eyeliner, mascara, lipstick. If that's not already overboard, guess what? They are also spray tanned and have teeth molds, also known as flippers so that their teeth look perfect. Still not enough? Check out their costumes. These moms are forcing their little girls to wear skimpy apparel, causing them to look like almost the equivalent of a prostitute.

  •  They are being trained to dress and appear as sexy.

Lastly, take a look at how they manage themselves on stage. They don't just smile a sweet smile and blow a kiss. No, no. These girls act as if they are adults performing in a night club. These little girls? They are taught raunchy moves and dance provocatively. They wiggle around suggestively, shake their tushes, come close to almost the equivalent of belly dancing, and end with a sexy look on their faces and then proceed to blow a kiss. Too much for a little girl? I do think so.
  •     They are learning that sexual parading is okay

Let's get something straight -- a four year old doesn't need to be wearing breast and butt enhancements. That is sick. That is exploiting your little girl. With having women and men judges as well as an audience, that is beyond inappropriate. No man needs to lust over a little girl, and definitely not a four year old. Again, that is completely disgusting.

Pageants are harmful. They crush little girls' self esteem, train them to become sexy, and they teach them all about sexual parading.

I don't know about you, but I think there needs to be some kind of change around here.

  1. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! I hate toddlers in tiaras...it is such a sad show! I agree with you 100% on everything you said. Thank you for saying it; somebody needs to!

I think it is so sad that little girls are being taught that being beautiful is merely outward. I saw a picture that said Toddlers in Tiaras looks like something that would happen in the capitol (from the hunger games). i totally agree, and that is very sad!

again, thank you for posting this. i admire you for always posting straightforward posts on your beliefs and not worrying what other people think! YOU GO, GIRL!

    God bless you!

  2. Thank you so much for this post! Brilliantly written. I agree with every word you said. Seriously, why can't people let kids be kids?! I hope that'll all change someday.

  3. THAT. IS. GROSS. I am totally with you - those parents are terrible to their children! Those four year old girls look twenty.

    Thanks for writing this post.

  5. I totally agree with you about there needing to be some change around here. I've never watched the show, but the pictures say enough for me. As a mother to a 6 year old little girl, I could not imagine any mother NOT wanting to protect their daughter from society's idea of 'beautiful'.

It's sad when a 4 year old wears more makeup, bares more skin, walks and acts more provocative --- than a grown woman.

  6. I could not agree with you more on this subject! It is absolutely horrible that parents make their daughters do this. I can't remember how long ago it was, but it was within a year ago, there was a mom who was injecting her daughter's face with Botox so her daughter wouldn't have wrinkles. Her daughter was in beauty pageants. I mean what the heck?! Six year olds don't have wrinkles.

These little girls should be playing dress up in princess outfits, not walking down a runway with fake breasts and in bikinis. I'm not saying bikinis are bad- they're for teens and grown women.

I think there should be a ban on child pageants like this.

THANK YOU for writing this post. It was awesome!

  7. That last photo totally broke my heart,I've heard about this. I want to know what those mothers are thinking they totally messed up their child,I'm not saying that these beautiful girls won't be nice girls, but think about it they are going to be craving mens attention, and want to be drop dead gorgeous etc....
Those little baby girls are adults...they skipped their innocent childhood,I bet you they knew more stuff then I do on some topics.
    Keep speaking the truth Anna.

  9. I know it is disgusting! But this is what some parents are teaching their children, if your not sexy and beautiful, then you are worth nothing. That is so WRONG!!! Other men shouldn't think you are sexy, they shouldn't see enough of you to come to that conclusion. The only one who should be seeing enough of your body to say that, is your husband. Why would you want anyone else to be able to think that of you? That's so not biblical! These poor little girls are being trained, that men SHOULD lust after you. If they don't, then you are obviously not sexy and pretty. THE ONLY, I repeat, ONLY person that men should lust after, is their OWN WIVES. No one else. Lust is something that God created for a husband and wife, anything else out of that box, IS WRONG!!!

Thanks for posting this Anna! :D

  10. Thank you SO much, Anna. This is so true. It's awful to see little girls giving away nearly everything that makes them beautiful in God's eyes, to become beautiful in the world's eyes. :(

  11. AMEN ANNA!!!! Yes!!!!
This is so true. Inner beauty is much more important anyway. Little girls should be out there living life, playing out in the sunshine and having fun, not dancing around like a stripper or something (if you will pardon my language).
The real problem with society however is how selfish we are. People simply do not care about anything but themselves. (especially when it comes to sexuality)
Children are seen as problems because they get in the way of the mother's life, i.e. abortion, and children are adopted into way less than ideal situations (i.e. gay couples, unmarried celebrities adopting orphans, etc.) simply to make the adults "feel fulfilled". Even the school system is more about keeping the teachers' unions intact than helping children become unique and educated individual.
It is really cruel to the poor children because they are ignorant and cannot fight back. We are a society are basically killing, or depriving of truth the next generation.
This is one of the causes I feel very strongly about--please keep up the good work!!!
    :)

  13. I definitely feel sorry for some of these little girls. They are so young and it is obvious that a good portion of those girls don't want to do all that stuff. I can't believe some of those pageant moms who push their kids into doing all of these things! :) Nice post Anna!

  14. Thanks for posting this, Anna! I do want to point out that self-esteem is a humanistic concept. Really, we are special because God made us so--- it doesn't matter what you personally believe about yourself, or what people say about you. We are made in God's image-- that's what is special about us (Genesis 1:27, etc.).

We should be focusing on increasing our inner beauty, instead of focusing on the outward (1 Samuel 16:7).

It is so sad how corrupt our culture is. I really feel sorry for those little girls For those who run the show and the parents too. It reminds me about what Jesus said in Mark 9:42.

    Blessings,
    Johanna

  17. i actually just watched a couple of episodes of Toddlers&Tiaras, and was absolutely disgusted. While some of the girls actually seemed to enjoy it, most of them cried and seemed to hate it. I also noticed that it was the MOTHERS were the ones that enjoyed it. They were using their little girls to make themselves happy. And almost all the moms told their little girls, 'lets get your makeup on so you're beautiful.' ummm, no. the little girls are beautiful without makeup. forcing their little girls to go through pain to supposedly be beautiful. it's despicable.

But mostly, I noticed that the moms were using their little girls to make themselves happy. it was saddening to watch.

    1. Oh my goodness, it is so horrible! My guess is that these moms are forcing their little girls to do things that the moms never got to do in life. It is so disgusting, you are right. I mean you don't tell some little girl, "Let's put makeup on you so you're beautiful!" No way! Girls should be told they are beautiful without makeup on.

      Thanks for your feedback, Rachel!

  18. As a family man I consider this show horrific and tantamount to child abuse. I would have every one of those moms charged with endangering the welfare of a child. The husbands I would just lock up for allowing it.
